I couldn't sand or scrub at the chipping paint on my chrome early C4 wheels, so I applied gel paint remover. I wiped away any excess on the chrome outer part of the wheel. Is this dangerous for the chrome finish on the rough cut aluminum wheel?

Maybe maybe not, I'm not sure. Time will tell. Pro tip: If you need to remove stubborn brake dust and crap from the surface of your wheel, a brass brush is awesome. The brass doesn't hurt the aluminum and after cleaning it is easy to come in with steel wool and polish everything up.

Paint remover won't cause any harm to aluminium, but it will dissolve the fauxchrome paint. Make sure you wash the wheel well before proceeding.

I bought some cheap steel wool from HF the other day to polish my exhaust, and the stuff totally works magic. Best $1 I have spent in a long time.

Even better, when the work is done, an alligator clip and a 9v will make for a good show.

First off, C4 wheels from the factory have a machined face. They are not chromed. Unless somebody took his wheels to get chrome-plated, they are actually just polished aluminum.

Second, polishing these wheels removes the machined finish and makes them look chromed.

Third, the wheels are covered in clear that will get stripped using the same techniques you would use to strip paint.

I know they were just aluminum-faced from the factory, but considering the signs of aging (pitting and bubbling) and shininess from these wheels, I'd probably drink the chrome (/polished aluminum) wheel cleaner I bought if they weren't. Thanks for the info.

I'm actually having a hard time discerning what was done to these wheels from the photo. Were the faces painted at all? There is supposed to be black paint inside the blades and, I think, inside the hub, and so that looks correct. But were they actually chromed?

If so, PO needs to be lashed 9 times.

the black paint inside the blades was chipping badly, so I'm trying to remove the old paint and either repaint black or leave bare metal (still haven't decided yet). They definitely look chromed to me, as there is a bubble and some pitting and the fascia is mirror-like. If I am right, which I believe I am, the previous owner needs to be lashed at least 10 times. If I'm wrong, I need to be lashed for being such a C4 noob and hurting the wheels. But the shine from this picture should tell you something it isn't telling me (picture will only paste to top). Anyways, I doubt the aluminum would bubble and pit so I'm assuming there is a chrome finish.
